Rockridge Library
College Ave at Manila

You are Invited to a Lecture and Discussion on What Exactly Makes One “A Person”
Dr. Bernard Rosen Presents
STAR TREK THE NEXT GENERATION
"The Measure of a Man."
In this episode Roddenberry and company explore the necessary and sufficient conditions for someone to be a person. Not all humans, e.g. the dead and those anencephalics born with little or no cerebral cortex, are persons. This is not contro-versial for humanists, but it is for those who think a person is an embodied soul. Picard serves as Data's counsel, arguing that he is a person even though not human or even a biological organism. Various theories of personhood are briefly mentioned and we shall discuss some of those.

Time permitting we'll discuss the implications of a humanist view of personhood on recent cases of those in a permanent vegetative state.

The library is within walking distance of the Rockridge BART Station
